As more and more areas get connected to the NBN, we are seeing new movements and developments in many communities that aren’t directly related to internet use. Disparate fields such as advanced healthcare services, education, coastal and rural living have found solid support from NBN. Powered by high speed and reliable broadband services, improvement of these fields, facilities, and services other than common internet use are becoming more common. These are just some of the after effects and benefits of an expanded, interconnected National Broadband Network.

The effects of having fast and steady broadband services are becoming integrated with the urban as well as regional and rural lifestyles. What are some of these specific fields and activities that are getting a huge boost from NBN? There are many and more to come, but just these five main new ones are sure to improve the quality of life in many new NBN roll out communities, whether they’re urban, rural, regional, or even isolated parts of Australia.

Going Wireless

With more areas getting covered under wireless services, we are seeing a boom for broadband connectivity in remote areas. This has been made possible with the further expansion of Fixed Wireless and Satellite NBN formats, through the recently launched Sky Muster programs and rollout campaign.

The increase of wireless NBN coverage parallels a boom for wireless mobile devices and users, offering an alternative format for common wired connections. There is also a parallel boom for the wireless industry with increased sales and more wireless activity nationwide.

Tasmania is the most recent region to receive Fixed Wireless NBN facilities, offering fast and reliable broadband internet with an ever increasing coverage area as the roll out continues. According to media centre reports on NBNco.com.au, 31,327 premises are now engaged in the wireless network, with more than 100 transmission towers currently operating with the intent of adding more for future expansion.

Atherton Tablelands is another area inching its way up to the NBN wireless area ranks. In another report as of late January 2016, 24 fixed wireless NBN facilities were confirmed operational, claiming 4,600 residences and businesses that cover and span across Tablelands, and also Mareeba and Cairns territories. More connections have been processed since.

E-change

E-change is a movement that involves moving to rural and regional areas, with accompanying green and sustainable lifestyle changes. It also aims more practical approaches to living, such as working at home, less commuting, less urban pollution and stress, less noise pollution, natural surroundings, lower cost of living, cleaner air, and greener living and lifestyles. It also definitely includes being connected properly to broadband internet.
What better time for this movement than now, with the current expansion and rollout of NBN services, particularly Fixed Wireless NBN to fulfill that last part. Now, the same level, speed, and reliability of fibre optics broadband can be enjoyed even in these distant locations. This will enable rural and regional citizens practicing E-change the same facilities and capabilities in these non-urban locations.

Typically, what’s keeping people from totally making this decision to move and go regional is the lack of connectivity and reliable telecommunications. But this is about to change as the expansion we are currently experiencing is going to take care of getting connected, as they are about to have the same facilities afforded as all connected urban areas.

Advanced Health Services

Advances in medical technology and personal health have been seen most recently in many smartphone apps and smart watch features and functions. With NBN becoming more widespread and available, it will help boost this industry to provide one-step direct healthcare using apps and devices that are not only faster, convenient, and more accurate, but also powered by NBN.

With the ongoing expansion of NBN, the same goes for better and more reliable installations of other similar devices such as medical alarms, monitors, and auto-diallers. This is crucial for people who need to have online and on-demand alarm facilities always present due to their medical conditions.

Better facilities for tele-health services can also be expected with better connectivity and reception. This will allow doctor and patient consultations by remote video conference, in cases where distance and time may be a key issue or detriment. Getting the NBN behind advanced health services will save patients on time and less expenses, and help improve medical services across rural and regional areas as well.

Fire/Lift alarms

Emergency services will be given an extra boost as older fire and emergency Lift Phones are to be transferred over to the NBN. Key issues of concern such as reliability, connectivity, and fast response mechanisms in times of emergencies and life-threatening situations will be eliminated. This will see across the board advancement for other lines of communication, apart from the usual standard phones, wireless mobile devices, VOIP and video chat facilities. It is essential to include emergency devices to the network and to provide a reliable network to help whenever there are any drastic situations at hand.

Educational Applications of NBN / Fibre

There are now many opportunities for long distance education and learning on your own time and pace, and conveniently, thanks to NBN and Fibre broadband. The same conveniences and principles of Internet TV and apps are easily translated to an educational application with fewer limits. Through high speed broadband and telecommunications, a more personal, customised form of education has closed in on the distance and time restraints between students and teachers.

There are no more issues to tackle as far as distance, differing time zones, unavailability of people, or lack of physical facilities to limit education. The device becomes the e-classroom, with the curriculum available anytime, with more convenience and flexibility to all distant, unscheduled, or physically challenged students. These factors no longer have to limit and inhibit students of all ages and types from receiving direct training, education, and testing.
